Hi there fellow mama! I'm a third-time mother and this time around, I was blessed with not one, but two little bundles of joy – a boy and a girl twin! As you can imagine, taking care of two newborns can be a bit overwhelming, but I've learned a thing or two that has made my breastfeeding journey with my twins an easier and more peaceful experience. So, if you're a new mom to twins, or just need some tips to make your breastfeeding journey smoother, keep reading!
You've probably heard that breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world and the best way to feed your babies. But what if you are a twin mom? How do you make sure that both of your twins get fed?
The following 5 tips were very helpful to me:
-
Get yourself a comfortable breastfeeding pillow. When you're breastfeeding two babies at the same time, a breastfeeding pillow can be a lifesaver. It's essential to find a pillow that is both supportive and comfortable for you. I highly recommend the TwinGo Pillow. This pillow as pictured below, has helped me to hold my babies comfortably, reducing the strain on my arms and back, and allowing me to nurse both my babies at the same time with ease.
2. Establish a feeding routine. Having a routine can make breastfeeding your twins less chaotic and more manageable. Try to feed your twins around the same time every day, this will help them to get into a rhythm, and it will be easier for you to know when they are hungry and when they are full. I usually feed my twins right after they wake up, before their naptime, and before bedtime. At 3 months this was our schedule:
7:30 am: Wake up and nurse
8:40am: Nap
10:30am: Up and nurse
11:30am: Nap
12:45pm: Up and play
1:30pm: Nurse
2pm: Nap
4:30pm: Up and nurse
5:30-6pm: On rocker and Nap off
6:30pm: Nurse then to bed
9pm: Dream feed
3. Invest in a hands-free electric breast pump. Breastfeeding two babies can be time-consuming, especially if you're pumping in between feedings to keep your milk supply up. That's why I highly recommend investing in a hands-free electric breast pump. I personally use the Spectra S2 Electric Breast Pump, and it has been a game-changer for me. With the Spectra S2, I can pump hands-free, giving me the ability to multitask while pumping, making the process much less overwhelming.
4. Take care of yourself. Breastfeeding can be tiring, so it's essential to take care of yourself. Make sure you get enough rest, eat well, and drink plenty of water. It's also important to find a few moments each day to do something you enjoy, whether it's reading a book, watching your favorite show, or taking a relaxing bath. By taking care of yourself, you'll have more energy to take care of your babies.
5. Be patient and kind to yourself. Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially with twins, but it's essential to be patient and kind to yourself. Don't be too hard on yourself if you're having trouble getting the hang of it. It takes time to get the hang of breastfeeding twins, but with a little patience, persistence, and support from friends and family, you'll get there!
As an added bonus, once both the babies have latched onto one breast at a time and are nursing well (for example, they're swallowing frequently), try switching off between breasts every few minutes while continuing to offer each one at least 10 minutes per side before switching again—this will provide extra stimulation for your milk production without overstimulating any one nipple too much or causing soreness or pain in either breast after several hours of frequent use.
But here's the thing—you can do it! Getting ready for breastfeeding twins is the same as preparing for any other newborns. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be.
In conclusion, breastfeeding twins can be a journey, but with the right tools and a little bit of patience, it can be a peaceful and enjoyable experience. I hope these tips help make your breastfeeding journey with your twins a bit easier. Remember to take it one day at a time, and never be afraid to reach out for help and support.
Happy nursing!
